Report on the recent rapid play tournament held at Tennants Auction House, Leyburn.

The venue has to be one of the very best in the country to play chess and it was a privilege to play in the event organised by Great Ayton’s Kegan Harrison who works at Tennants.
Fourteen players contested a single swiss tournament over 6 rounds with 25 minutes each on the clock. I found myself being roped into arranging the draw for each round as well as playing but I enjoyed doing both.
Some excellent chess was played in a friendly atmosphere although me taking a win because of my opponent’s illegal move may not have been in keeping with the convivial mood in the room.
Great Ayton’s Mike Hardman was the top-rated player however he did not get his own way dropping 1.5 points to end up equal first in the open section with Kegan. Prizes were awarded in accordance with the grades; there was a big disparity between the top players and the bottom.
The majority of payers were from Great Ayton and Thornaby Chess clubs with two from Harrogate.
I hope this type of event is repeated by Kegan because it was great fun and a jolly good day out in fantastic surroundings. Hopefully the next one will attract a bigger entry.
