National Chess Week For Barnardo's
Dave and I were contacted by Middlesbrough Gamers Club to help them run a Chess Tournament on Tuesday night 21st October 2003. They offered to donate £125 to Barnardo's if we could help them. So without further to do we said yes and gathered all the sets, clocks and software to run a 10min 5Rd Swiss. We arrived at the St Mary's Centre on Corporation Road around 6.20pm and met Chris Dickson who had contacted us to help out. Chris showed us round the Games club and then to the room where we would be holding the chess tourney. We got set up and registration started at 6.45pm with the tourney due to start @ 7pm. We had 16 entries which was fantastic, most had never used a clock before, so a little demo was needed. They all soon got the hang of it and by 7.05pm Rd1 was under way. We had 4 players tie for 1st place, so a 5min blitz play off was called for to find a clear winner.

From October 20 to 26 the National Chess Week is being organised in Britain. Half a million players are expected to take
part, generating a fund of £500,000 for children's charity. The money goes to Barnado's, an organisation that helps handicapped children and young people.
