07/06/05 Cleveland Chess AGM Mins in Brief

1min silence was observed for Les Boxx

Matters Arising
The use of score books was brought up - the official line is No Score Books to be used during a game - only a score sheet to record the game

Writing Moves down before making the move is now illegal, penalty for breaking this rule is you lose the game - FIDE have this new rule as from 1st July - Cleveland team captains are to make their players aware of this new rule before the match starts, CCA have given teams  1year to implement this rule and get use to it.

Officers Reports
S Dauber - Treasurer
Accounts in good shape - Registration fees have been adjusted due to the new NCCU/BCF pilot membership scheme that is been introduced.

Ray Pallister - League Organiser
Bad start to the season (teams dropping out/ relegation promotion etc) but ended OK. Thanks was given to Synthonia (Accepting promotion to A Div)

B Myers - Individual Organiser
Good season - David Wise won the Individual Open, and Bernie Price won the Minor (for a 3rd year in a row)

B Rowe - Grader
9 Events in for grading - no problems

S Henderson - Webmaster
Thanked everyone for sending in results, also thanks to all that are contributing articles - G Walsh pointed out that the "Cleveland Chess" web site won the BCF web site of the year award 2004 - webmaster thanked everyone who voted and supported the site.

Tony Kiddle give a vote of thanks to all officers.

G Walsh - Chairman
BCF to become a company limited by guarantee
Management board was reduced from 21 to 9
Grading list is to be put on the BCF web site from July 1st (not sure if this is 2005 or 2006, I think 2006) for 3 weeks so that people can check and amend errors before it is taken back off and sent to the printers - as I understood it, the grading list will be put back on the BCF web site in August as well a the Grading list book been available to purchase.

Mobile phones (rules) - G Walsh to look into this and report back

Officer re-elected en-bloc

07/06/05 From BCF News - Britain’s Brightest Family

Britain’s Brightest Family:
Endemol UK, the country's largest independent TV producer, is
developing a new show for the BBC entitled 'Britain's Brightest Family'. A cross
between Ask the Family and Mastermind, each show will have two families
competing with each other to achieve the title 'Britain's' Brightest
Family' by testing all aspects of their collective knowledge.

As well as a traditional general knowledge round, there will be tests
of spelling and mathematical ability, verbal reasoning rounds, and a
chance for families to show off their specialist knowledge on a subject of
their choice.

Only the families who work together and successfully pool their
individual talents will make it through to the final round and a chance to win
the title and prize.

Endemol are urgently looking for family teams of four or five to
compete in the show. The children should be siblings, and at least one adult
should be the children's parent. The other adult team member can be an
aunt, uncle, step-parent or similar. If you are interested in
participating in the PILOT episode on the 29th of June ….please contact:

It is proposed that the only way of a team leaving a division is by way of relegation or promotion and any team earning promotion must accept it and move up a division. It is also agreed that any team of players not complying with these conditions will cease to exist as a team, irrespective of change of club or name of a team.

CHESS CLUB @ ORMESBY COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
by Kiki Haines

The club started during the 2001-2002 academic year after persistent requests from one very enthusiastic Year 11 chess player, Simon Buist. This academic year the club has 42 members and meets every Wednesday lunch time. The pupils, age 12 to 16 years old, have a chess club pass and come to room 41 as soon as the bell rings for lunch. They fill in the registrer, collect their board and compete against each other or against Mrs Haines and Mr Stocks from the maths department. Players leave the room for lunch at 13.00 and return either to finish a game or to compete with another available player. The outcome of their games is recorded and displayed on a special notice board outside the classroom. They gain 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. Last year two of our pupils entered the Middlesbrough Chess Congress at the Town Hall and seven pupils were invited to the British Land Megafinals, which took place at St. Olave's School, Clifton, York on Sunday the 2nd May 2004.

The best performing Chess players of autumn term 2004 were :

Mark Fuller 59
Andrew Lewis 30
Peter Taylor 24
Paul McCarthy 22
Jason Mitchell 21
Paul Blowers 20
Phillip Graham 19
Glyn Hopkins 16
Rebecca Owens 12
Liam Parkes 10

There is a significant difference in the level of understanding of the game between the various players. It is fantastic to see that pupils teach each other, with the younger pupils willing to compete against the older pupils. Players either with physical disabilities or other special needs compete equally with others. When the bell goes for the afternoon lessons, all the boards are packed away and the pupils leave with the satisfaction of having played a highly motivating and challenging game.

26/01/05 HOME SECRETARY SAYS SEND US A CHEQUE MATE AS
BARNARDO'S LAUNCHES FIRST 24 HOUR "CHESSATHON"

Charles Clarke confessed to a chequered past and an interest in game
playing when he offered his support to Barnardo's Chess Week 2005, "I
would like to offer my support for the inspiring project that Barnardo's
is running with National Chess Week. I hope that many of you will, as
I do, have fun playing chess and raising money for Barnardo's"

One of the highlights of this year's events is the first 24 hour chess
marathon to mark Barnardo's National Chess Week. Hastings and St.
Leonards Chess Club are taking on the ultimate chess challenge in aid of
leading children's charity.

Michael Foster MP will be kick-starting the proceedings by playing the
first move, as the 24 hour countdown officially begins. The Hastings
and St. Leonards Chess Club will have a ten strong team playing back to
back chess, with additional members joining them throughout the chess
marathon.

INTERVIEW/PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Friday 28th January 7.00pm
Hastings & St. Leonards Chess Club, Pelton House, 2 Cornwallis Terrace,
Hastings

Event organiser, Simon Taylor said: 'It's going to be tough staying
awake, especially through the small hours. But we're looking forward to
taking on the challenge as it's all going to benefit Barnardo's.'

National Chess Week is encouraging children and young people to think
extreme, develop strategies and out-think their opponent as schools and
clubs across the country sign up to take part in the charitable chess
challenge. Throughout the week a variety of interesting and innovative
events will be taking place across the country, as well as games online.

For every game of chess played during National Chess Week, which is
sponsored by The British Land Company, participants will be asked to
donate £1 to Barnardo's, helping to raise £50,000 for the charity's work
ensuring children across the UK are free from poverty, abuse and
discrimination.

After football, chess is the most popular sport in the world and
uniquely brings people of different ages, abilities and backgrounds together.

Chess is an ancient game which is enjoying a revival and is played by
celebrities such as Madonna, Jude Law, Sting and Lennox Lewis to name a
few.

To find out if there is an event happening near you, or to register, go
to www.nationalchessweek.co.uk

To join the Hastings and St. Leonards Chess Club email:
info@hastingschessclub.co.uk If you would like to sponsor the chess
marathon, please make cheques payable to Barnardo's and send to Simon
Taylor, Hastings & St Leonards Chess Club, Pelton House, 2 Cornwallis
Terrace, Hastings. Alternatively, turn up on the night and pay a 50 pence
visitors fee.
