- CCA Positions Update
Following
the resignation of the previous holder of the position I am required in
accordance with the Constitution to carry out the duties of Chair/CEO until
such time as an EGM can be held prior to the start of the new season. Any
matters concerning the CCA should be referred to me with immediate effect.
There has been a positive development following the AGM last week. A
volunteer has come forward for the vacant position of match organiser,
further details about that soon. Several qualified people have offered to
help in making sure the web site continues as a means of communicating
information to the members and in the very near future the position of web
master/deputy web masters will be resolved as a temporary measure until the
EGM when appointments can be ratified. In the interim I say thank you on
behalf of our members to those who have come forward offering their services.

28/05/10 - New Video link + YouTube
A new VIDEO page (LINK is on the right hand side menu) has been
created to host video footage if or when it is available, this is fed via a
Cleveland Chess YouTube account which has been set up to host the video
footage. EDITED - The YouTube site has all video's hosted but unlisted, this
means no one can see nor view them on the YouTube site, the only place the video's are viewable is on the CCA website.
Two video's are now on the video page.
Enjoy
Steve (webmaster)
22/0510 - Best Game Competition
The result of the Best Game competition, and presentation of prizes,
will be announced at the AGM on 2nd June. Norman Stephenson has had a very
difficult task selecting the top three games from the excellent games sent
in. All the entries, complete with Normans annotation and comments, will be
published on the CCA web site in the days following the AGM. I now know which
game has won and there is little doubt it is thoroughly deserving of being so
chosen.

28/04/10 - Individual Competition
Gordon Middlemiss and Peter Ridsdale
won their round 7 games by default and ended up with 4 1/2 points and thus
joint winners of the Minor Championship. Neither player are
comfortable with this situation and therefore have decided to play each other
to decide winner and runner up positions. They played each other in an
earlier round and that game was a draw. This decision reflects well on two
respected players who want to try and win the title on merit by playing a
game of chess. The players who defaulted had to through no fault of their
own.

27/02/10 - B Division Whitby v Elmwood
Due to
perfectly understandable reasons Elmwood B are not able to play the match
against Whitby due to be played on Monday 1st March. The two Captains have
agreed a 5-0 default to Whitby. The executive officers are aware of the
reasons for this decision and support it. Elmwood have an excellent record of
playing matches in accordance with the published fixtures but on this
occasion default is sadly the only option available.

02/02/10 - MATCH START TIMES
The attention of all Captains is drawn to
CCA rule 8.6.
The start time for matches shall be 7.00p.m or the time agreed by the
team captains.
This means that the two captains can, before the date of the match, agree a
different start time to that specified in the rules. Captains are at liberty
to insist that the match starts at the specified or mutually agreed time if
they so wish.
It will be really helpful if captains do agree a different start time to that
specified in the rules they notify the match organiser.
Starting times for matches has been of concern to some captains this season
and as match organiser all I can do is refer to the specific rule which is
primarily a matter for the team captains. Any further concerns about this
issue should be referred to me asap.
Ernie Lazenby. Match organiser.
Mobile phones- Clarification of the current position.
CCA rule 4.1 All games shall be played in accordance with the
prevailing FIDE laws of Chess unless they are inconsistent with the CCA rules
and, in which event, the CCA rules shall prevail.
In July 2009 FIDE introduced a rule that directs if a mobile phone makes a
noise during a game the owner of that phone shall lose the game unless his
opponent cannot win by any series of legal moves in which case the game is
declared drawn.
Currently the CCA does not have any local rule to amend this FIDE law and
thus any game decided in accordance with it cannot be overturned by the match
organiser. Until such times any proposals to water down this rule are
discussed and passed at the 2010 AGM the FIDE rule stands.
