19/12/10 - B Div - 1pt Deducted
The Recent B division match between Redcar B and Redcar A on 15th December, reported a default on board 1 for Redcar B. This default was assigned to a late illness from the Redcar B board 5 player. However the decision to allow the default to be taken on board 1 is in breach of the CCA rules, namely rule 8.4.
It is accepted that this was agreed by the two teams on the day, and was not an attempt by Redcar B to gain an advantage in any way.
Redcar B will be deducted 1 league point for failing to comply to CCA league rules, namely rule 8.4.

01/10/2010 (Part 2) – Thanks from CCA President

I wish to offer a very big thank you to all club officials who have ensured that the season can start without any problems with player registration/fees.

Also to Steve Cole, Peter Ridsdale, Philip Mitcheson who have been very busy sorting out the admin for the new season and not least to Paul Douglass and Keith Smith without whose work on the web site we would not have been able to start the season so smoothly.

I wish everyone a good season of competitive chess. Well done one and all.

RIP Bent Larsen 1935 – 2010

CCA President sent a note of commiserations to the Danish Chess Federation President on 16th September 2010

Dear Sir.

It is with very great regret and sadness we read of the passing of Bent Larsen.

Mr Larsen was an Honorary Vice President of Cleveland Chess Association something he was very pleased to accept when he visited Teesside in the 1970's.

I recall with great pleasure his talks and simultaneous display when he took on nearly of 70 of the areas best players. A memorable event. One of our very best players recalls Bent getting a chair at the simul and saying to him as they finished the game(he was the last to finish) 'now take great care Norman you are winning this'. Norman won the game.

All of us who are still around who saw Bent play in the Teesside Grandmaster Tournament in 1972 and listened to his talks recognise he was one of the all time great chess talents and a very decent man.

His passing sees another chapter in the history of great players closing. Very sad. On Sunday 19th September we are holding a memorial quickplay tournament in memory of two of our players, I will have the players present also reflect on the passing of our Hon. Vice President.

Our very best regards and sympathies

Ernie Lazenby
President and acting Chair Cleveland Chess Association (UK)

22/08/2010 – Webmaster required

A volunteer is required to take on the position of web master from early September onwards. The work will involve looking the web site to keep it up to date and posting information from or authorised by the executive officers.

Much of the work centres on the league/cup and individual championship and much of the preparatory work has been completed by the current web master who will be unable to continue much after early September.

It is essential that a volunteer for this position has the IT skills and time to commit to it. This matter will be an agenda item at the EGM on 1st September by which time we should be in a position to report if any progress has been made.

The executive officers thank Paul Douglass for all the work he has undertaken since taking on the position as Webmaster. Anyone interested in taking on the position should contact Ernie Lazenby asap.

CCA Executive.
